1st Morel of the Season!

Morel (Morchella) season is here in Northeast Ohio!

Ideal hunting conditions:

  • Soil should be moist and at least 40-50*F

  • Daytime temperature of 60*F+ (consistenly)

Where to find them:

I have a lot of luck finding morels in the forest near…

  • black walnut trees

  • apple trees

  • honeysuckle

  • violets

  • mayapples

  • I have also had success along creeks, rivers and swamps.

  • On occasion, I will find them near white and Norwegian pine.

Identifying Characteristics:

  • Uniform shape.

  • Pitts and ridges

  • Attached directly to stem

  • Hollow stem and cap

My favorite way to enjoy morels is sauteed with wild ramps, butter, salt and pepper! They are excellent on steaks and in stir fry. If I do not plan on consuming them immediately, I dehydrate them and use them later!
